The other acts were Chug and Gavin Braid. I believe Chug were excellent as per usual and played a great cover of 'Wuthering Heights (also as per usual). Gavin played a good set of his own songs and song covers. He has a great voice and was very enjoyable to listen to. That's about all I can recall about this gig. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- September 17th 2003 - The Balcony This gig started with a disappointing turn out. Ashley Christie was on first and played an amazing set of her own songs which the impressed the whole audience which had grown quite a bit during her set. Only Way Out were on next and played a couple of newer songs. Steve had trouble from the start - his guitar kept going out of tune and to top it off a string snapped during one of their songs. Personally, I enjoyed their set but Steve and Chris were really disappointed. Gavin Braid was on next and played a set of mostly pop/rock covers with a few of his own songs as well. We were on last and played decent set but sadly most of the crowd had left to catch the last bus home (one of the annoyances of playing after 11.00). Over all it was a decent gig with Ashley Christie definitely being the highlight of the gig. From the start we had problems with the PA system which meant we had to start about half an hour late and with 6 people playing that's always going to cause problems. Help Centre, playing their first ever gig, were on first an were unbelievably tight as a band and played a great set. We were on next and although we didn't really make any mistakes I just didn't enjoy the set and kind of felt like no one else was either, even though we got good feedback - probably just me being paranoid. We played just one cover in our set, 'Luka', and the rest was all our own songs which was really good. We actually decided to cut a few songs out during the set so as to not go over time. After our set we sold all our CDs so I guess there must have been at least a few people that liked our set - maybe I was just being paranoid. Chug were on after us and played an enjoyable set that the crowd loved with a great cover of Wuthering Heights. Unfortunately though the PA system kept cutting out mid-song. Brut McGronovich aka. Kev went on next to play in front of a crowd for the first time and he was extremely nervous. He played a good version of Spilled Milk, by Feeling Left Out, that I particularly enjoyed. He wasn't happy with the set but everyone else agreed that it was really good. The penultimate band of the night was Only Way Out. As usual they play a great set which sadly they had to cut a bit short due to us running out of time. Last on were Goldbloom who played one of the better sets I've seen by them. They had everyone clapping along to the up-beat summer tune Life's A Beach. They had to cut there set a little short aswell due to it being nearly midnight. Over all a very successful gig with probably the biggest crowd we've had yet. Joe Rattrey played first and played a good set, lacking only a little more confidence. After Joe played a few more people started turning up. Emma Forman, a singer/songwriter form Aberdeen, played next and she impressed everyone. She was, in my opinion, a mix of Sheryl Crow and PJ Harvey, and played a set that definitely made me want to see her again. We were on next and I personally thought we played a really scrappy set. There were a lot of mix ups between me and Paul which no one else seemed to notice but I got really annoyed with. Last on the bill for that night was Ashley Christie. She had a lovely voice and played a great set of her own songs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 29th 2003 - Beat Bar We played first at this gig and did a set of most of our own songs which was good. Didn't make any mistakes, that I noticed anyway, which is always good and we managed to sell all our CD's which was even better. Mike Hynd from Skintwire played a solo set next and played some good songs, including Swiss Army Romance by Dashboard Confessional which was really good. Gavin Braid was on next and played an impressive set - especially since he only knew a couple of days ago that he was playing since Chug had to pull out. We'll definitely be trying to do more gigs with Gavin. Only Way Out played last and had a bit of a nightmare set. They were having trouble getting they're guitars to the right tunings and had to put up with broken strings. Overall not a happy night for them. There was a great turn out and for most of the night the bar was packed and there was hardly room to move. As with the last gig Chug started off and played a set which went down well and that I really enjoyed. Goldbloom were on second and played a set that was up to their usual high standards. For this gig though they had their violinist playing with them which added a little to the sound but he didn't play on that many songs. Only Way Out then played a great set which included a cover of 'Brick' by Ben Folds Five which I particularly liked. We were on last which is never really an ideal slot as a lot of people usually leave before the end but there was still a decent sized audience. Our set contained more of our own songs than ever before which was good. 'Twist and Shout' is now officially the most fun cover we've ever played. Myself and Paul both made a few mistakes and had a couple of mix ups but we seemed to go down alright and that's what matters I guess. An enjoyable gig but would have been more enjoyable if we weren't on last. It didn't start off too well with us turning up to find out that we didn't have an amp to put the guitars through but once we got that sorted out the gig went reasonably smooth. Chug started off with a great set that was quite Idlewild-like in style. After Chug were on Jaclyn Duncan played a set of lighter tempo songs. She was quite nervous but still pulled off a good set, if not a little shaky. We were on next and played to a packed pub which was enjoyable, especially since we played, in my opinion, a faultless set with several of out own songs. Also we sold a few copies of our EP which was quickly put together that afternoon. Goldbloom finished off the night, with their singer arriving about 15 minutes before they were due to start after having car troubles. They played a very impressive set which made me glad I didn't leave early to catch the last bus. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 25th 2003 - Beat Bar This gig went great.....I think. Paul started with a short set which went down well. During Paul's set loads of people started piling into the bar. Goldbloom went on next and totally amazed everyone. I was worried about having to follow them but our set started quite well until about the 3rd song when two of my fingers totally seized up. I thought it totally messed up the set but apparently nobody noticed and we got a lot of good feedback so it turned out to be a good gig. Only Way Out played last and, same as the gig at Sinatra's, played a great set (even though they thought it didn't sound good.). Click here for a flier for the gig ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 8th 2003 - Sinatra's Bar This has been my favourite performance I've played so far. There wasn't an amazing amount of people there, maybe around 15 or 20 but I felt totally confident playing this gig. This was the first Indi Rev gig without Michelle on vocals. Paul Matthew (possible permanent vocalist) provided vocals for this gig and did a great job considering we only had 2 days practice. After we had played Paul did a set on his own which was good as it was all his own songs. This was followed by the final act Only Way Out who played a great set of their own songs and some covers. Our set list was: All Along The Watch Tower Brian Wilson Hallelujah High Noon Ashleigh's Song The Old Apartment The ITV Munky Blues Mad World Happy Iris Your Winter Ashleigh's/Joe's Song, High Noon and ITV Munky Blues were all our own songs and all had the lyrics made up on the spot. Nothing like a good bit of improv. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- February 20th 2003 - Sinatra's Bar First full gig for Indi Rev. For this gig we were supported by friend of the band Jaclyn Duncan. She played a 6 song set where she sang and switched between playing piano and guitar. Also Michael played guitar for The Calling's 'Wherever You Will Go'. Indi Rev's set consisted of 10 covers and 5 original songs. Highlights out of the covers were 'Losing My Religion', 'Hallelujah' and 'Sweet Child O' Mine'. The audience was relatively small but there was a good atmosphere and all the songs were well received. All in all a good first gig. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ November 7th 2002 - Morgan Academy Talent Show The first ever performance by Indi Rev. We only did one song, a cover of Avril Lavigne's 'Complicated' but it was a very memorable track for us and hopefully for whoever heard it. Another great band making their performing debut, and also winning the contest, were Heavy-Metal outfit Ghosts Of The American Dead. |
